Redesigned Book Cover

Project Brief

For this project we were tasked with picking a book to redesign the cover. Because this project was for a typography class, we needed to be type focused, and or have the type and illustration interact.

During the research process, I took inspirations from woodcut prints for texture and style, Saul Bass for font inspiration, and cooler, woodsy colors.

In order to execute this task, I began to think of what elements I thought were neccesary and would work well for the cover. I pulled out characters and scene elements and simplified them in my own illustration style. I then created a font that had a rough, natural feel. After creating the font, I found ways in which I could have the type and illustrations interact with one another, resulting in the following.

During my experience with this project I was able to learn more about my own personal style as well as how to create an effective composition.

Conclusion and Outcomes

In the end I was able to create a design that answered the problem of the project and that I was proud of. Being able to create my own type and images for this project allowed me to express myself and my style. This design recieved a silver Addy award in the Spring of 2023.
