Historical First Steps Collage

Project Brief

For my collages, I wanted to focus on historical first steps. The first steps I am focusing on are that of Neil Armstrong on the moon, Roald Amundsen at the South Pole, and Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay's climb to the top of Mount Everest. In order to create these images I am taking photos from their explorations i.e. thier team, location, flags planted at the sight, and combining them into a unique composition that tells a story. I am using heirarchy to show the main person. I am also using a mix of black and white and color images to create contrast. In adding in the elements of the camera, and tv, I am trying to represent how the news of these events would have been captured or seen.

The idea behind these collages was to involove hands and feet and what they can do. WHether that be something the hands create or the way feet move a person to new areas. I chose to go with historical first steps and ended up with the collages seen here. I began with researching important adventurers and discoveries and landed on these three. I then found images and began placing them together as my initial collages. In order to create a system between the three I found similar objects that could be included in each, like the flags and tv/camera/typewriter.

This project helped to figure out new ways to create systems and explore new medias.

Conclusion and Outcomes

By the end of this project I had three collages that were able to tell a story. I am happy with the outcome and had a god time learning about how to create systems, and effective collages.
