Peace Day Mural

Project Brief

We began this project by creating icons for things that we thought symbolized peace. The icon I created with, and took to move foward with for this project was a line drawing of a hug. We then were taksed with creating a mural that not only incorporated the icon, but the concept as peace as well.

During this project...

In order to execute this task, I first needed to think of things that could describe or symbolize peace. After many drafts I landed on the idea of a hug and created my hug icon. We then needed to take the icon we had created and make a mural that captured the idea of peace and included our icon.

I love illustrating, and love projects when I get to use illustrations. I was glad to be able to use those skills for this project. Throughout my process I made sure to explore a broad spectrum of ideas to represent peace. I created icons with doves, olive branches, etc. I ended up going with the hug icon because I liked that it was a bit different than typical icons for peace. The use of line and the variation in the line help to create a sense of motion and unity.

Conclusion and Outcomes

I decided to go with a mural that envolved space becasue of the feeling of peace I'm sure one might feel there. Even more than that I wanted to capture the peace of what someone in space looking down on Earth might feel. To accomplish this, I placed the icon as a reflection in the astronaut's helmet. While this project had its ups and downs with trying to create something new in a different way, I like what I ended up with and the story it can tell.
